20-year-old arrested after man is killed while trying to defend his friend during drug-related robbery

A 20-year-old man is in custody after a man who came to the defense of his friend during a home invasion robbery was shot and killed in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.

Colton Beed was arrested for investigation of murder, two counts of aggravated burglary (first-degree felonies) and obstruction of justice (a second-degree felony).

According to court documents, Beed and “others” went to 359 N. Star Crest Drive at about 8 p.m. on Saturday. They forced their way into the home and Beed “rummaged through the house looking for … drugs.” A resident of the home hid and tried to call police “but could not get through” and, instead, contacted a friend, Mason Hunt, 26, who was working nearby.
