Pop Lewis, co-captain of Friars ’87 Final Four team, dies

PROVIDENCE - Ernie `Pop’ Lewis, one of the stars of Providence College’s Final Four team in 1987 has died.

Lewis passed in his home in Philadelphia, according to family members.

Lewis was a co-captain on the `87 team that finished 25-9 and shocked the country on its way to the Final Four in New Orleans. Along the way coach Rick Pitino pushed Lewis, Billy Donovan and Delray Brooks to embrace the 3-point shot and power the Friars. Lewis hit the deciding corner 3-pointer in one of the season’s biggest win, an 82-79 victory over No. 11 Georgetown.
