Keeping Cooley was job No. 1 for Friars athletic director Driscoll

PROVIDENCE — When the call came last Friday, Bob Driscoll felt a twinge in his stomach.

Providence College’s athletic director had heard from other suitors inquiring about the services of his basketball coach over the last eight years but this one seemed a bit different. This was the University of Michigan, the maize and blue, Hail to the Victors.

“I told Ed Michigan is probably one of the top 10 brands, you have to listen,” Driscoll said. “I didn’t want him to, but he had to.”

Cooley met with Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel Monday in Florida and when he returned to his hotel at the Big East annual meetings in Ponte Vedra Beach, Driscoll was waiting for him.
