NEW YORK, N.Y. — After doing a decent job disguising their collective weaknesses for a few weeks, the Providence Friars took a major step back Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.

Faced with the holding off a rabid, scrappy St. John’s Red Storm, the Friars couldn’t handle the pressure and fumbled and bumbled their way to a 80-69 defeat. The win was St. John’s (14-11, 3-9) first over a Big East team not named DePaul.

The loss is the second straight for a Providence team that is now 13-12 overall, 6-6 in the Big East and just watched its faint NCAA Tournament hopes end outside of a conference tourney run.
