ANAHEIM, Cal. – As the final minutes wound off the clock and his team’s mistakes kept piling up, Ed Cooley didn’t seem ready to panic on the Friar bench.
Cooley went with his seniors, plus sophomore David Duke, as the Friars attempted to close out a first round game against Long Beach State at the Wooden Legacy. But as a 10-point lead with 4:51 left melted to a precious few points, the Friars looked like the tight team. Finally, Long Beach came up with the winning plays after a foul call on Emmitt Holt with three seconds left opened the door for three game-winning free throws by Michael Carter.
