Wayne Rooney seeking to stop relegation-threatened Derby and his managerial career sinking into the mire as Manchester United and England legend faces a defining 90 minutes on final day in the Championship

Wayne Rooney spent much of his career playing in the showpiece games of the greatest tournaments yet there were none more important than the one he faces on Saturday.

At the end of his first season as a first-team player, the 17-year-old Rooney had five senior England caps and was a key member of an Everton team who finished seventh in the 2002-03 Premier League. A year later, just 18, he scored four times at Euro 2004, joined Manchester United for £27million and scored a hat-trick on his debut.

His career in management has not started quite so successfully.
