Rooney ribs Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand with Manchester derby overhead claim

Wayne Rooney has joked that his overhead kick for Manchester United in a derby date with City remains better than Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning effort against Juventus.

Real Madrid’s Portuguese superstar was at his talismanic best once again in his latest outing, with a deadly double netted in a Champions League quarter-final first leg clash with Juventus.

His second of the night was the most spectacular, with an acrobatic bicycle kick seeing him showered with praise – with former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand among those to be left almost speechless.

A man who witnessed Rooney’s effort in 2011 and Ronaldo’s seven years on told BT Sport: "His [Rooney’s] one was off his shin pad but the occasion and where he is, to score this goal.
