Referees chief David Elleray says VAR has been a SUCCESS with football now 'fairer' - despite fans and players being left fuming by long delays and strange decisions

IFAB technical director David Elleray believes VAR has made football much 'fairer' despite the technology remaining contentious among fans.

VAR is in its second full season in the Premier League and has its staunch opponents from fans to pundits, players and managers - with last season causing particular outcry with a handful of goals being chalked off due to very marginal offside calls.

There's also been anger about lengthy checks and confusion over handball, with some officials at Stockley Park opting to punish players despite situations where there was little else they could do to avoid contact with the ball.
