The Premier League have requested statistics from the Department for Education amid concerns over the academic performance of academy players.

Sportsmail understands that the league has been granted permission to view the national pupil database by the DfE, which holds GCSE results.

Officials are now comparing the results of children attached to football clubs to both regional and national averages.
