ON THE ROAD: Swansea are playing a dangerous game under manager Russell Martin... his refusal to compromise is admirable but a little naive at times

Russell Martin has 99 problems as Swansea City's boss, but the pitch ain't one.

It used to be. But a relaid surface last year at least means the free-flowing football and 700-plus passes per game that Martin insists on are possible.

The main issue for Martin has been the free flow of goals into Swansea's net. Four at home to Birmingham, three at home to Stoke and then Middlesbrough.

Those defeats were part of a sequence that yielded one win in 10 games and only five points from a possible 30. Yet there are curious aspects to the decline of a club which was established in the Premier League only five years ago.
