Mick Oldfield has dedicated 55 years of his life to his local cricket club as a player, captain and now chairman and groundsman... and it's the challenge of being pitch perfect that keeps him going

Mick Oldfield turned 80 in March and for the last 55 of those years he has been a cornerstone of one cricket club.

From player to captain, and now chairman and head groundsman, Oldfield has dedicated two thirds of his life serving Sheriff Hutton Bridge, the reigning Yorkshire Premier League champions.

So what is it that keeps him going? ‘The challenge of preparing pitches,’ he instantly replies. ‘My enjoyment is seeing the lads playing on a Saturday on a decent surface. That’s all I need.’
