Liverpool defender Joel Matip has signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League leaders, extending his stay at Anfield to the summer of 2024.
The 28-year-old Cameroon international’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season. Jurgen Klopp has now moved to secure the future of a man who has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months.
Signed from Bundesliga side Schalke on a free transfer in the summer of 2016, Matip was a key figure in Liverpool’s Champions League victory last season and has now formed arguably the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League – if not in Europe – with Virgil Van Dijk.
