Manchester United have warned that fans will face serious consequences if they target opponents Chelsea with ‘rent boy’ chants when the two teams meet at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The homophobic slur has been aimed at Chelsea for years by rival fans, but United have reminded their supporters that is now classed as a hate crime that could result in them being kicked out of the stadium, hit with a banning order and even face criminal charges.
A statement from the club read: ‘As we prepare to welcome Chelsea FC to Old Trafford this weekend, Manchester United would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to ensuring that Old Trafford remains a place where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.
