Jonny Bairstow's surgeon feared England star would NEVER play again as he compares treating his horrific leg injury to 'putting Humpty Dumpty back together'

Jonny Bairstow's surgeon has admitted that he feared the England cricket star would never play again following his freak golf course injury last year.

The 33-year-old slipped walking to the third tee of the Pannal course in Harrogate last September and broke 'multiple bones in his leg and his ankle'.

He missed out on a lucrative Indian Premier League deal but defied expectations by making England's Ashes squad.

It has been a mixed series for Bairstow, though he impressed at Old Trafford in the fourth Test last week by scoring a 99 not out.
