'He is probably the most hated man in football,' then Birmingham City defender Martin Grainger said in 2000.

'The bottom line is what goes around comes around. There will be someone nastier who will get him one day.'

The figure Grainger was referring to was Kevin Muscat, the former Australian midfielder who represented the likes of Crystal Palace, Wolves, Rangers and Millwall during his controversial 19-year professional career.

Muscat has tended to be dubbed as either football's ultimate hardman or the sport's dirtiest ever player, and the list of various controversies is lengthy.
