Footballers splash the cash on gym equipment such as weights, resistance bands and benches as they face battle to maintain fitness due to extended and enforced coronavirus break

Footballers are stocking up on gym equipment in an attempt to maintain their fitness during the coronavirus crisis.

With most training grounds closed and public gyms unavailable, many players, including some in the Premier League, have been buying items like weights, resistance bands and benches so they can follow individual programmes at home.

The top-flight stars may have a gym in their house but this is not the case for many players, especially those in the Championship and below.

Now the suspension of football has left players to manage their own fitness until they are permitted to resume training.
