The once-capped Spain international has been forced to hang up his boots because of a chronic ankle problem

Former Premier League star Michu announced his retirement from football due to an ankle injury via social media on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a successful 14-year professional career, notably turning out for Celta, Rayo Vallecano and Swansea.

He also played once for Spain, featuring in a World Cup qualifier against Belarus.

"According to medical reports, the current situation of my right ankle has come to a point where is [sic] has forced me to say goodbye to you as a professional football player today," he wrote.
