It was always going to be hard for Darwin Nunez to fill the immense void left by Sadio Mane following the Senegal star's departure to Bayern Munich last summer.

With 120 goals in 269 appearances for Liverpool and a whole string of personal and collective honours during his time at Anfield, Mane will go down as an all-time great.

But that meant when Nunez arrived from Benfica for a club record fee potentially reaching £85m, the pressure on him to hit the ground running was colossal.

The early talk ahead of the season was all about who would be the better addition out of Nunez and Erling Haaland after the Norwegian's £51m move to Manchester City.
