Andy Murray wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016 to complete unprecedented hat-trick

Odds-on favourite Andy Murray became the first three-time winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award when the 2016 ceremony took place in Birmingham on Sunday night.

After winning Wimbledon, Olympic gold and becoming the world No 1 for the first time this year, Murray made history again by becoming the first person to complete a SPOTY trophy hat-trick.

Three of the shortlisted nominees – Alistair Brownlee, Max Whitlock and Kate Richardson-Walsh – represented sports that have never previously won the award, in triathlon, gymnastics and hockey, respectively.
