Have Liverpool Let the Premier League Slip Away to Manchester City Already?

Over the past few English Premier League seasons, there have been two clubs who have set the standard. Either Manchester City or Liverpool have won the Premier League title in the past five seasons, with the Manchester club the being the most dominant with four to their name. The 2022/23 Premier League campaign was set to be another battle between the two teams as Liverpool finished just 1 point behind Manchester City last season. The question is, have Liverpool let the league slip away in the early stages of the season?

Key Signings
There was much discussion over who signed the best striker in the summer transfer window. Liverpool added Darwin Núñez from Benfica for £67.5 million and Manchester City took Erling Haaland off Borussia Dortmund for £54 million. Haaland has become a key player for Manchester City immediately and already looks set to be the leading goal scorer in the Premier League this season. The same cannot be said for Núñez, who has yet to cement his place in the Liverpool starting XI. The goals scored by Haaland compared to what Núñez has offered has been a major difference in the way the two teams have started the season.

Results
Liverpool started the Premier League season with a 2-2 draw at newly promoted Fulham and the draw immediately put them on the back foot. Manchester City had the more difficult looking game on paper at West Ham United but came away with a 2-0 win following a convincing performance. Liverpool have since dropped points at home against Crystal Palace and away to Everton plus they were defeated 2-1 by bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. In the meantime, Manchester City remain undefeated in the Premier League and have dropped 4 points, with draws at Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

That leaves Manchester City 5 points clear of Liverpool at the early stage of the season and the way Manchester City have been playing, Liverpool are already under pressure to not drop any more points in the Premier League.

Level of Performance
Not only have results been disappointing for Liverpool this season in the Premier League but the level of performance has not been there for Jurgen Klopp’s team. Other than the 9-0 home win over Bournemouth, who were terrible, Liverpool have stuttered in matches and that must be a major concern going forward. The performances at Fulham, Manchester United, and Everton plus at home to Crystal Palace were not good enough for a team hoping to compete with Manchester City for the title.

However, there is still time for plenty of twists and turns in the Premier League this season. A defeat for Manchester City and Liverpool could close the gap. Liverpool have to play Manchester City twice in the league this season and that could see a 6 point swing should the games end in Liverpool’s favor. It has been a bad start for Liverpool but the Premier League title has not slipped away, with plenty of time remaining to catch Manchester City.
