SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots fought through a fight set thriller to defeat Santa Clara 3-2 at the Leavey Center on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the 3-2 win against San Francisco Thursday night, this marks the second ever road sweep in conference for the Pilots, their first ever also coming against USF and Santa Clara last year. The Pilots battled through five sets with scores of 13-25, 25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8.
After Santa Clara (7-10, 0-5) cruised through the first set to win 25-13, the Pilots responded by fighting evenly though the second set, until Thompson pushed the Pilots (11-4, 2-1) ahead by two with a kill to make it 20-18.
