MALIBU, Calif. – Portland men's tennis senior Michail Pervolarakis defeated No. 33-ranked Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech in three sets to open play Thursday afternoon at the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters held at Pepperdine University.

Pervolarakis, the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year, opened the 2017-18 season ranked No. 95 nationally in the Oracle/ITA preseason rankings, but is the No. 10 seed in the 32-player draw. After dropping the first set 6-1, he bounced back to win the second 7-5 and then controlled the third set to win 6-1.

"His opponent is highly ranked and the best player in the Ohio Valley Conference and it showed in the first set," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said.
