SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland sophomore Rey Ortiz is the West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week after the Pilots opened league play with a 3-1 win over No. 18 Pacific at Merlo Field on Saturday night. Ortiz had a goal and two assists during the week, which also included a trip to No. 10 Virginia.
Saturday night Ortiz was masterful as he sent in a brilliant ball in the 16th minute to Erik Edwardson, who finished with a header to hand the home side a 1-0 lead on Pacific. Later in the second half, Ortiz scored perhaps the goal of the year for the Pilots when he hit a beautifully struck bending ball that curved through traffic and made it past a diving keeper and into the side of the net.
