Veteran tight end David Johnson among the Steelers cuts

The Steelers trimmed their roster to 53 players Saturday and there were a few mild surprises among the cuts.

Veteran tight end David Johnson was released. He became expendable after the Steelers acquired Vance McDonald from the 49ers earlier this week. Tight ends Jesse James and Xavier Grimble made the initial 53-man roster.

The Steelers used a sixth-round pick on long snapper Colin Holba, but they kept free agent Kameron Canaday instead. Holba was the only draft pick the Steelers cut.

Fifth-round pick Brian Allen is one of seven cornerbacks on the initial 53-man roster, joining starters Artie Burns and Joe Haden, Will Gay, Mike Hilton, Cameron Sutton and Coty Sensabaugh.
