Trai Essex Can’t Understand Steelers Abandoning The Run Game: ‘Way Too Soon, Way Too Often’

The Steelers haven’t been a great running team, but they’ve been good, better than 2024. So why aren’t they running the ball more? Former Steelers OL Trai Essex can’t make sense of it, especially given OC Arthur Smith’s history. Last year, the Steelers ran the ball over 51 percent of the time, fourth-most in the NFL.

This year? The Steelers are running the ball just 43 percent of the time, the 10th-lowest. While they happen to have Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, have the results justified that ratio? That’s less fair to ask with Rodgers coming off his worst game, but this isn’t the first time coaches have had to address getting away from the run game.
