After a strong preseason from several of their younger receivers, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to cut ties with veteran wideout Robert Woods. It was only briefly, however, as Woods returned as one of their practice squad signings just days later.
Despite a disappointing summer from the former 1,000-yard receiver, having him be available to be brought up from the practice squad in the event of injury or poor play made sense for both sides. Woods is no longer an impact on offense, with just 629 yards over the last two seasons.
Despite his failure to make the Steelers roster, Ian Rapoport reported that his release came at his own request, instead only wanting to continue his career if it meant being on a 53-man roster.
