The Pittsburgh Steelers addressed their cornerback depth this week by signing Asante Samuel Jr. Now, the Steelers aren’t necessarily expecting the former Los Angeles Charger to come in and produce immediately. He hasn’t played since Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season due to a spinal injury, and they’ve signed him to their practice squad, not their active roster.
But that doesn’t mean the Steelers aren’t excited about having him. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin sees Samuel as a natural fit in Pittsburgh’s scheme.
“He’s got a skill set, obviously. We’ve seen that on tape,” Austin said Thursday, per video from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Chris Adamski on X/Twitter.
