Mike Tomlin stepping down after 19 years at the helm of the Pittsburgh Steelers, roughly 14 hours after another painful one-and-done trip to the playoffs, was a bit of a surprise.
Maybe not a surprise in the grand scheme of things, considering things weren’t going all that well for him. But a surprise in the suddenness and the totality of it. After 19 years, Tomlin is walking away from football — for now.
That move now creates another head coach opening in the NFL and has the Steelers as one of the more coveted openings across the NFL.
