Friday Flashback: Clarence “Butch” Avinger – Steelers Lone First-Round Draft Pick Out Of Alabama

Will the Pittsburgh Steelers ultimately select an Alabama player in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft? It’s been speculated by many most of the offseason that they will, and that the player will most likely be running back Najee Harris. If Harris, or any other Alabama player for that matter, is ultimately selected by the Steelers in the first round of this year’s draft, it will be quite a story. You see, the Steelers haven’t drafted an Alabama product in the first round since 1951 when they selected Clarence “Butch” Avinger, a quarterback, fullback, and punter, ninth overall that year.
