Data Shows Pittsburgh Made Key Coverage Adjustment To Stop Colts Offense

Jalen Ramsey playing safety wasn’t the only difference in the last line of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense. The coverage the defense played was a major shift, too. Hurting at safety with injury and illness and hurting on defense in pride, Pittsburgh looked like a different defense Sunday in style and substance.

Per NextGenStats, that was accomplished by changing the defensive shell. Normally a one-high team, the Steelers greeted QB Daniel Jones with nearly 50-percent split safety, generally meaning two-high, looks in their 27-20 win.

In Week 9, the Steelers defense showed a significant shift in coverage tendencies, using split-safety coverage on a season-high 46.
