With a home run and a scoreless inning, Ke'Bryan Hayes and Mitch Keller represent Pirates well at Futures Game

WASHINGTON — On prom night at Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, the prom king was nowhere to be found. Gelinda Hayes called her husband, Charlie.

“Hey, you seen Ke’Bryan?” she asked.

“Yeah. He’s in the cage, hitting.”

That wasn’t uncommon for Ke’Bryan Hayes. At 6 years old, he traveled an hour and 40 minutes three times a week to play baseball; Charlie bought a conversion van and outfitted the back with tables, lights and a TV so the kids could do their homework on the way. He routinely took 300 to 400 swings a day as a 12-year-old.
