The Pirates’ grueling 162-game season came to an end Sunday in Washington, but some players are putting vacation plans on hold for just a little bit longer.
Instead of hopping on a plane to the offseason destination of their choice, members of the team will be boarding a FedEx cargo plane Thursday to deliver 150,000 pounds of goods to people in Puerto Rico suffering from the unfathomable damage caused by Hurricane Maria.
“As an organization, obviously we’re always looking for opportunities to give back,” Pirates president Frank Coonelly said. “As soon as we saw the devastation of Hurricane Maria down there, we wanted to help.
