Series Preview: Pirates at Tigers

The biannual 1909 World Series rematch (and/or MLB’s We-Don’t-Want-to-Separate-the-Ohio-Teams Cup) was set to have a little bit more intrigue with a tenured Pirates middle-infield duo suiting up this time for Detroit (8-7). If there was excitement for that, it got cut in half when Jordy Mercer went on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain suffered Saturday.

Mercer is 10-for-43, slashing .233/.298/.326 with solid defense boosting him to 0.2 fWAR, second among the struggling Tigers position players in the early going. Josh Harrison is just 7-for-52 (.135/.220/.154), but also a positive defender so far, as the Tigers’ regular second baseman.
