As Arquimedes Caminero walked slowly from the pitcher’s mound to the home dugout at a stunned and silenced PNC Park Wednesday night, his head bowed, the Pirates flame-throwing right-hander looked like a man who knew he had just ruined the third-biggest party in Pittsburgh.
Indeed he had.
Caminero’s first-pitch slider to Jarrod Saltalamacchia — the Detroit Tigers catcher with a name even longer and more perplexing than Caminero’s — with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning landed halfway up the right-field bleachers for a grand slam that erased a one-run Pirates lead and put the Tigers ahead for good in a 7-3 win.
