The Red Sox have hired Andy Barkett, who managed the Pirates’ AAA affiliate at Indianapolis in 2017, to join the staff of new manager Alex Cora. Barkett will serve as assistant hitting coach.
Barkett joined the Pirates’ organization as assistant minor league hitting coordinator in 2016. He managed the Indians to a 79-63 record in 2017. Prior to joining the Pirates, he managed a number of minor league teams in the Tigers’ and Marlins’ organizations. His sole stint in the majors as a player came with the Pirates in 2001, when he batted .304 in 17 games.
