The Pirates have signed former St. Louis Cardinal David Freese, the team announced this evening.
Freese, 32, is a seven-year MLB veteran who played all but the past two seasons with the Cardinals, and was MVP of the 2011 World Series.
He played the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. He will wear No. 7.
Freese expected to start the season as 3B until Kang returns. Freese then will be the right-handed member of the Pirates first-base platoon.
