Pirates sign first-round draft pick Newman

The Pirates signed first-round draft pick Kevin Newman today, agreeing to terms with the shortstop from the University of Arizona only a week after they selected him.

Newman hit .370 with 22 steals in his junior season at Arizona, earning first-team Pac 12 honors. In three years with the Wildcats, Newman hit .337. Newman won the batting title in the Cape Cod League, a wood-bat collegiate summer league, in consecutive years in 2013-14.

As a senior at Poway (Calif.) High School, Newman hit .374 with 17 stolen bases, but was not selected in the 2012 draft. He also played basketball in high school.
