Pirates prospect suspended for positive drug test

Pirates prospect Clario Perez has been suspended 80 games for testing positive for Stanozolol, a synthetic anabolic steroid used to promote muscle growth in weakened humans and animals.

Perez, 23, was one of five minor-leaguers suspended Wednesday for testing positive for banned substances, according to a Major League Baseball release.

Perez, a right-handed reliever, had a 2.65 ERA in 44 appearances last season between Class A Bradenton and Class AA Altoona. He had a 16-17 record with a 3.69 ERA in seven minor-league seasons.

The Pirates re-signed Perez to a minor-league deal Nov. 30.
