Pirates notebook: “It’s cool to be able to come back here and get a ‘W’

CINCINNATI — Ryan Vogelsong’s victory Friday night closed a gap that spanned more than a decade.

The previous time Vogelsong was the winner in a game with the Pirates, Sept. 14, 2005 in St. Louis, he relieved Oliver Perez in the second inning. Larry Walker pinch-hit for the Cardinals, So Taguchi started in center for St. Louis and Rob Mackowiak played first base for the Pirates.

“I’ve had a lot of moments like this in my career,” Vogelsong said. “It’s cool to be able to come back here and get a ‘W,’ obviously.”

The Pirates elected to put Juan Nicasio in the rotation and send Vogelsong to the bullpen.
