Pirates notebook: Cole pitches well in first rehabilitation start

ST. LOUIS — Gerrit Cole pitched three scoreless innings in his first rehabilitation start Tuesday with Class AAA Indianapolis.

Cole, who is on the disabled list because of a strained right triceps muscle in the back of his upper arm, struck out six without walking a batter. He allowed two hits, and threw 30 of his 45 pitches for strikes.

Cole could make another rehab start as early as Sunday, on normal rest. That would put him on schedule to return July 15, the first game after the All-Star break, but the Pirates might want him to make another rehab start or two and get built up to six innings.
