DETROIT — The Pirates pulled off a win Tuesday night in a most perplexing, improbable way.
Neil Walker ripped a double down the right-field line off Detroit Tigers reliever Tom Gorzelanny with two outs in the 14th inning, and Josh Harrison raced home to score the go-ahead run as the Pirates defeated the Tigers, 5-4, in the series opener at Comerica Park.
The winning rally was very nearly undone by a maddening mistake on the base paths by Gorkys Hernandez, who pinch-ran for Chris Stewart in the 14th.
Harrison, pinch-hitting after five hours on the bench, doubled to the gap, but Hernandez thought center fielder Rajai Davis had made a diving so he doubled back, nearly over-running Harrison.
