Pirates foolishly ignore biggest need with controversial No. 6 pick in 2025 MLB Draft

With the sixth overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez out of Corona High School in Corona, Calif.

Widely regarded as one of the best prep right-handed pitching prospects in recent years, Hernandez was ranked the No. 3 prospect in this year's draft class by MLB Pipeline. He has elite stuff, touching 98 mph with his fastball, but also boasts a changeup that misses bats with ease and a curveball with above-average spin. He was named the 2025 Gatorade National Player of the Year at the high school level

Despite Hernandez's tremendous upside, this was a somewhat controversial pick for Pittsburgh at No.
