Joe Starkey: Rich Hill handles historic defeat with class

Nobody will ever suffer a hard-luck loss like Harvey Haddix did on May 26, 1959. Haddix, after all, threw 12 perfect innings that night, and pitchers these days consider it a success to simply survive half that many innings — and give up three earned runs.

Rich Hill, however, is one of the few who could relate to how Haddix must have felt after losing that game on an unearned run in the 13th inning.

Hill on Wednesday night at PNC Park threw one of the best games you will ever see, only to lose on the only hit he surrendered — a home run to Josh Harrison to lead off the bottom of the 10th.
