Gene Collier: 25 years ago, the Pirates suffered critical departures. Sound familiar?

Nowhere on my Pirates promotional schedule for 2018 can I find one giveaway item commemorating the silver anniversary of the 1993 team, an apparent oversight that appears easily rectifiable on July 6 now that Andrew McCutchen Figurine Day seems a bit hollow.

Is it too late to substitute a handsome Al Martin bobblehead or a full color Midre Cummings growth chart?

OK, fine, just let the dusty memories of the ‘93 club fade into oblivion then, but an opportunity is being missed. The parallels between that team and the one Clint Hurdle will put on the field to open the 2018 season on Thursday are not only numerous and tortured, but perhaps even encouraging for an organization and a fuming fan base desperate for some quantum of hope.
