The Pirates added five minor-league players to their 40-man roster before Wednesday's deadline to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.
Infielders Ke'Bryan Hayes, Oneil Cruz and Will Craig were added, as were right-handed pitchers Blake Cederlind and Cody Ponce.
To make room on the roster, the Pirates designated pitchers Dario Agrazal, Montana DuRapau, Luis Escobar and Williams Jerez for assignment.
The additions of Hayes and Cruz were expected since they are the Pirates two best position player prospects.
