Beloved former Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar has joined the team’s coaching staff as a defensive development coach, and European tournament scout.
Gonchar, 41, spent five years with the club and won a Stanley Cup championship with them 2009. He was invited to this year’s training camp on a professional tryout, but was not offered a contract to play.
The club wanted him to stay with the organization and offered him an off-ice position.
“He’ll be a real good addition for us,” Penguins’ general manager Jim Rutherford said. “This is a good role for him to get started.
