Ron Cook: Lightning's dirty play will come back to hurt them in Game 2

The Penguins lost a playoff game Friday night but won a series.

That was my take of their 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final.

It became clear to me on a television timeout about 12½ minutes into the game.

At one end of Consol Energy Center, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang came out of the team room and stepped on the ice, ready to continue. Just 2:50 into the game, Letang went head-first into the boards after a cheap, vicious hit from behind from Lightning winger Ryan Callahan.
