Report: Fenway board approves deal to buy Penguins

The sale of the Penguins is a step closer to reality.

The board of Fenway Sports Group has approved an agreement to purchase the team, according to a report from Sportico.

The Penguins' board approved the deal earlier this week.

There is no word on when the sale -- which ultimately will require the endorsement of the NHL's Board of Governors -- will be finalized.

An individual not directly involved in the sale cautioned that "it's a complex deal," and that "there's still a process to go through."

Although Fenway would become the majority owner of the franchise, Mario Lemieux is expected to retain a minority interest and there are growing indications that Lemieux's business partner, Ron Burkle, will remain involved, as well.
