Penguins' state-of-the-art practice facility, medical center opens Monday in Cranberry

No hockey player wants to prepare for an injury-riddled season, but the Penguins flashy new training facility in Cranberry might cushion the blow.

The Penguins unveiled the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex Friday. It is billed as the first of its kind in the country for combining an elite NHL team practice facility with an on-site sports medicine and sports performance center considered world-class quality.

“This is not simply two sheets of ice in a practice facility,” said Dr. Vonda Wright, the facility medical director. “It’s so much more.”

The facility boasts two full size hockey rinks, on-site magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray imaging and a dedicated sports performance center that will be run by NHL veteran Gary Roberts.
