Penguins Notebook: NHL punishes Capitals’ Orpik for late hit

The NHL suspended Washington defenseman Brooks Orpik three games for his late hit on Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta in the first period of the Penguins’ 2-1 Game 2 win Saturday.

Orpik struck Maatta in the head at 4:13 of the first period after Maatta had taken a shot on net. Orpik received an interference penalty for the hit; Maatta left the ice with assistance from his teammates.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan had no update on Maatta’s status at the team’s optional skate Sunday, but said he was “probably not optimistic” Maatta would be able to play tonight in Game 3 of the team’s Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Capitals.
